Eye Exam

At Beckley Vision Center, Dr. Holliday and our staff offer comprehensive eye exams in Beckley, West Virginia to help you see clearly and maintain optimal eye health. Our comprehensive eye exams go beyond just checking your vision. We also assess the overall health of your eyes to provide you with the best care possible.

Comprehensive eye exams are much more thorough than a routine eye exam or vision screening. Even if you feel your vision is fine, these exams can detect signs of diseases hiding in your body. Some eye diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma, can have no symptoms in the early stages. Regular eye check-ups can catch these conditions early on when they are more treatable. Dr. Holliday may also spot signs of other retinopathies and systemic diseases, including high blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol, and diabetes, sometimes before your healthcare provider does.

What to expect during your eye exam

During your eye exam in Beckley, the staff will perform pretesting and then Dr. Holliday will review preliminary testing during the dilated exam. We will perform different tests such as a glaucoma test (a simple screening to measure inner eye pressure), a visual acuity test (how far you can see at a certain distance), and a visual field test (checking your visual field for signs of vision loss or blind spots). We will also check your depth perception, color vision, and eye movement. If you need corrective lenses, Dr. Holliday will perform a refraction test, using advanced technology like an autorefractor or digital phoropter, to determine your exact prescription for contact lenses or glasses. We will ask you about your medical history, your family medical history, and any concerns you may have.

At Beckley Vision Center, we believe in providing our patients with the highest quality care using state-of-the-art technology. During your exam, we may use cutting-edge technology like optical coherence tomography or Optos retinal imaging to create high-quality digital images of the internal structures of your eyes. These images provide detailed information about your overall eye health and can help us detect signs of optic nerve damage or conditions such as diabetic retinopathy or macular degeneration. With digital retinal imaging, we can track changes in your eye health over time and tailor our treatment plans accordingly.

Once all tests are complete, Dr. Holliday will review the results with you and clearly explain his findings. If he detects any signs of eye diseases or chronic health issues, he will recommend treatment or follow-up visits to manage the symptoms effectively. If you need glasses or contact lenses, we carry a selection of stylish frames from top brands as well as specialty contact lenses for hard-to-fit conditions.
